Psoriasis Psurvival

Kim Kardashian and I have something in common, and it isn’t that we are both world-renowned influencers.

We both have psoriasis.

In October I started getting dry spots on my elbows that were unbearably itchy. They were scaly and sore. They never expanded past the size of a dime, but I felt them all the time.

Then in November, the same thing started happening on my hands, where my pinky fingers meet the hand. That’s when I went to my doctor and was diagnosed with psoriasis. She gave me a prescribed corticosteroid for when the symptoms are unbearable but suggested that I find some over-the-counter treatments.

Now that I’ve talked to my doctor about it and got some facts, I suspect that I’ve had psoriasis for most of my life. I had an itchy patch on my knee from when I was 15 until I was in my mid 20’s. It was almost 10 years of daily itching! Sometimes it would be as small as a dime, and sometimes it would cover the entire front of my knee. I’d find a product that would quell the desire to scratch, but nothing cured it. One day it was gone entirely after months of minimal itching.

Kim has been talking about her psoriasis flare ups lately, which has the internet buzzing about treatments. These are my five personal favorite over-the-counter products that I’ve used to treat my psoriasis.

Cortizone 10 Anti-Itch Lotion for Psoriasis

If I had to choose one favorite product that I use to treat my psoriasis symptoms, it would be this one. It has the anti-itch power of Cortizone 10 ointment in a hydrating lotion. When I get a plaque, it softens it, which is the first step to healing. I keep one in my purse, one in my work space, one by the couch, and one in the bathroom to apply after a shower or washing my hands.

Desert Essence 100% Pure Jojoba Oil

Every once in a while I’ll get a really rough plaque that just won’t go away. I use jojoba oil two or three times a day to moisturize it, and in a few days it softens and starts to look like human skin again.

Freshfield Vegan Omega 3 DHA Supplement

I’m not vegan, but regular fish oil pills give me the fish burps. Since adding these to my morning supplements, I’ve had fewer plaque flare ups, even in the cold winter months!

White Cotton Gloves

After I put on lotion or my ointment, I top it off with a pair of these gloves. I cut out the index fingertips so I can still tap my devices. Yes, it does look totally ridiculous, but it really helps to lock moisture into my skin. I throw them in the laundry with my delicates and get a few wears out of them before they fall apart.

iTvanila Cool Mist Humidifier

Humidifiers add moisture to the air, which helps keep the skin hydrated. I have two of these: one for my work space, and one for the bedroom.
